This episode is a dialogue between Flora and Saul. There has been a car

accident. One car – one automobile has hit another one and then immediately

left. Let’s get started.

Flora: What happened to my car?!

Saul: I saw it happen. A car came around the corner and hit the back of your

car.

Flora: Didn’t the driver stop?

Saul: No, it was hit-and-run. The driver just took off. He was driving like a bat

out of hell. It looks like he caused some damage.

Flora: Some damage?! My car is totaled. I hope whoever it was gets his license

revoked. Better yet, I hope the judge throws the book at him and he does jail

time. But how are the police going to catch someone who leaves the scene of

the crime like this? That guy must be a real jerk!

Saul: Take it easy. Maybe he just panicked. It’s probably his first offense.

Maybe he’s young and just learning how to drive.

Flora: Maybe…Hey, why are you defending the driver?

Saul: Well…

Flora: You know the person driving the car, don’t you? You’re not an innocent

bystander. You’re trying to talk me out of calling the police!

Saul: Well, I have this nephew who sometimes borrows my car, and he drives

too fast. He did hit your car, but it’s a simple fender bender.

Flora: Fender bender?! My car is totaled.

Saul: I’m sure it’s not as bad as it looks. If you don’t call the police, I’ll make

sure it’s repaired. It’ll be as good as new.

Flora: Are you trying to pull a fast one on me?

Saul: No, not at all. I’ll get your car fixed, right after I wring my nephew’s neck!

Step IV. Translate the dialogue using modal verbs in brackets in the second part of the dialogue you will have to provide modals YOURSELVES in sentences with "(...)" . Learn the translated version in roles:

Flora: Неужели это случилось с моей машиной? (can)

Saul: Я видел, как это случилось. ( can)  Машина выехала из-за угла и врезалась сзади в вашу машину. Скорее всего, водитель о чем-то мечтал в тот момент. ( must) Хотя, может быть, он потерял управление. ( may/ could/might)

Flora: Неужели он не остановился? ( can't)

Saul: Нет, я видел, как он врезался и сразу же уехал. ( can) Водитель пустился наутек, как молния. Похоже, он нанес вам  повреждения..

Flora: Повреждения?! Моя машина всмятку! Кто бы это ни был, пусть у него отберут права! ( would)  А лучше пусть судья даст ему максимальное наказание и пусть он сядет в тюрьму. ( let) Только вот как его можно поймать, если он уехал с места ДТП? (can)... Этот парень должно быть реальная сволочь! ( must)

Saul: Я рекомендую вам не принимать все так близко к сердцу ( should)  Может быть, он просто запаниковал. ( may) Скорее всего, это его первое нарушение ( must) Вероятно, он молод  еще только учится водить. ( could/ may)

Flora: Может быть... Стоп! А c чего бы вам его защищать? ( should) 

Saul: Ну...

Flora: Вы не можете его не знать! (can't) Скорее всего, вы не невинный наблюдатель! (...)  Видимо, вы пытаетесь отговорить меня от звонка в полицию. (...)

Saul: Ладно, у меня есть племянник, которому позволено брать мою машину иногда. И он водит слишком быстро. Это был он, но ведь это совсем мелкое ДТП!

Flora: И вы осмеливаетесь называть это мелким ДТП?! (dare) Разве вы не видите, что моя машина всмятку?! (...)

Saul: Я уверен, он не так плоха, как выглядит. (...) Если вы хотите, чтобы она выглядела как новая, вам бы не надо звонить в полицию.(had better) Я договорюсь, чтобы ее починили профессионалы. ( have smth V3) Она должна быть как новая. (...) 

Flora: Видимо, вы пытаетесь меня обмануть. (...)

Saul: Разве я могу вас обмануть? (...) Да ни за что?! Я починю вам машину сразу же после того, как сверну шею племяннику. Вы не должны ни о чем волноваться ( ...)
